Rebuild or replace? What to consider when your heavy diesel engine is wearing out
When a dozer, loader or haul truck starts showing its hours, every fleet manager faces the same question: rebuild the engine, or replace it? Get it right and you save money and downtime. Get it wrong and you pay twice.
Here’s how our team in Mackay helps clients across the Bowen Basin make that call.

Signs your engine is due for attention
Most engines tell you they’re struggling well before they fail. Watch for:
- Rising oil consumption or blow-by
- Loss of power under load
- Excessive smoke, especially on start-up
- Oil analysis showing increasing wear metals or coolant
- Low compression or uneven cylinder readings
- Engine hours approaching the manufacturer’s recommended overhaul interval
Catching these early is the difference between a planned rebuild and a failure in the middle of a shift.
When a rebuild makes sense
A quality rebuild is often the most cost-effective option when:
- The engine block and crankshaft are in serviceable condition
- The rest of the machine has plenty of working life left
- You want to keep a known, proven engine in the machine
- Lead times on new or exchange engines are long
A properly done rebuild restores the engine to specification. It includes a full strip-down, inspection, machining where needed, and replacement of wear components like liners, pistons, rings, bearings and seals.

When replacement may be the better option
Replacement can be the smarter call when:
- The block or crank is cracked or damaged beyond repair
- The machine itself is near the end of its life
- Parts for the engine are obsolete or hard to source
- An exchange unit gets the machine back to work much sooner
The downtime question
For mining and civil operations, downtime often costs more than the repair. Planning a rebuild ahead of time, around a shutdown or a quieter period, keeps machines earning. That is why oil analysis and condition monitoring matter: they give you time to plan.
